How to Reduce Bounce Rate of a Website

Ideally, the bounce rate of your website should be in the range of 30 to 50%. However, if the bounce rate of your site is above 70%, you need to take some concrete measures to reduce bounce rate of your website.

If you are increasingly experiencing high bounce rate, you can do several things to reduce it. I managed to improve the bounce rate of my blog by 25% over the past two months by following some simple steps.

Although, bounce rate might not be the right metrics to measure the quality of your blog content; however, it can negatively impact the ranking of your site.

Tips to Decrease Bounce Rate

Identify the pages with high bounce rate

First, identify the pages that are contributing to high bounce rate in your blog. In the Google analytics, you can easily identify the pages with high bounce rate. In your Google Analytics dashboard click on Behavior then click site content. In site content drop down menu choose All Pages and will see a window that displays all the pages as shown in the screenshot below.

The window provides you useful information related to Unique Pageviews, Average Time on Page, Bounce Rate and Page Value. You can also arrange the information according to your convenience. For example, if you want to identify pages with high bounce rate you can short the information using the performance command on the panel provided at the upper right side of the window.

Figure out the reasons behind high bounce rate

Once you have discovered the pages with high bounce rate, open the pages in another browser one by one. It would become a tedious process if you have many pages in your blog. In that case, you should better focus on a few pages per day and try to improve the bounce rate of those pages one by one.

Now check the social shares and social media likes on your page. Delete or direct search engines not to index the pages performing poorly on social media sites. It will help you improve the overall ranking of your website. On the other hand, if you have got a decent amount of likes, social share or backlinks it means there is no problem with the content of your page. On such pages, you need to focus on interlinking.

Check the internal links in the pages

If your high bounce rate posts have weak internal links, add relevant links to your page. Internal links improve your site navigation and enable your blog visitors to read other pages on your blog. Internal links are also useful from the viewpoint of search engine ranking.

On the other hand, if your pages have strong internal links and still you are experiencing high bounce rate you need to check out the source of traffic to these pages. If you are getting organic traffic on these pages it means you have not used right keywords to rank these pages higher in the search results.

Check the keywords you are using for optimization

Remember, there is a very slight difference between right keywords and wrong keywords. For example, if you are using keywords like “cheap branded shoes” whereas your content is related to sports shoes only, you are most likely to experience high bounce rate. Similarly, make sure to make your title as clear as possible. In other words, avoid misguiding your audience.

Also, read:

Create actionable call for action

Give a strong reason to your blog visitors to subscribe to your blog. Offer your audience a free ebook for subscribing to your blog or provide a reason to visit other pages on your blog. You can also include videos or podcast in your content.

If you are sure your site is not a victim of any of the above-mentioned problems, you need to check the word count of the pages with high bounce rate.

Avoid writing very long posts

Although long posts are increasingly gaining popularity as they stand a better chance of ranking higher in the search results, however, sometimes they also become the cause of high bounce rate. Interestingly, the most popular posts on my blog have the highest bounce rate.

One of the reasons for the high bounce rate on these pages is the word count of these pages. Although visitors spend a considerable amount of time on these pages, however, they leave these pages once they get the information they need.

A long post takes more than usual time to read, and visitors are most likely to leave the landing page after reading such long posts. So make sure to keep your post at reasonable length and provide additional information through internal links.

Alternatively, you can also reduce the bounce rate of short posts in your blog. It will help you to improve the overall bounce rate of your blog. This is what I usually do to improve the bounce rate of my blog.

However, if your blog content can be easily read and understood, it will not take much time for readers to read your content quickly. Avoid grammatical mistakes, arrange you content effectively and use a font size that can be read easily.

Also, read:

Improve site navigation

Check out whether the links are easily visible to your blog visitors. Make sure your blog readers can easily find the links to most popular posts and blog achieves. Moreover, provide a sitemap for human visitors, too.

A poor navigation increases the bounce rate as visitors find it hard to search the information they are looking for. Therefore, make sure to add Google search box gadget to enable your readers to search content they are looking for within your blog.

Google search gadget not only helps your readers to search the information they are looking for  it also helps you get insight into what your blog readers want to read in your blog. You can use the information to create new posts for your blog readers.

Finally, improve loading time of your website

You are most likely to experience high bounce rate if your website takes more than usual time to load. When a site takes more time to load, users are most likely to leave the page to look for the information somewhere else. Thus, slow loading speed leads to high bounce rate.

You can significantly lower the bounce rate of your website by improving the loading speed of your site. Check the issues related to loading speed of your blog or website and address them immediately.

Google Search Console provides you useful insight into the issues related to loading speed of your website. You can use this tool to improve the loading time of your site.

How to create a custom 404 page for BlogSpot blog

A custom 404 page directs your blog users to a working page on your blog. When your blog visitors click on a broken link, a 404 page directs them to root page of your blog or any other related page on your blog or website.

Therefore, it is extremely important to create a custom 404 page for your blog.

A custom 404 page is not only useful for your blog readers but also helps you improve the ranking of your blog. It is useful for visitors because it directs them to your blog and prevents traffic loss.

Moreover, it sends useful information about the broken links on your site to the Google search console which in turn helps you to take action to rectify the problems related to link errors.

If you have not verified your blog property in Google Search Console I would advise you to add the property to Google Search Console.

How to create a custom 404 page manually

If you have knowledge of HTML you can use HTML code to create a custom 404 page. However, if you are not HTML savvy, you will have to first create your 404 Page. To create a 404 page follow the following steps.

  1. Click on pages on the left side of your blogger dashboard
  2. Create a new page
  3. Here create a personalized message for your blog visitors. There are various types of custom 404 redirect messages that you can choose for your blog. Usually, a custom 404 page begins with the sentence “Sorry the page you are looking for is no longer available” and then you can redirect you blog visitor to any other pages on your blog such as the most popular posts on you blog or to the root page (home page) of your website.
  4. Once you have created a custom page you do not have to save it.
  5. Click on the HTML tab of the page.
  6. Copy the whole HTML code
  7. Now, in blogger blog open setting, go to search preference and click custom page not found under errors and redirection.
  8. Paste the HTML message in the custom page not found section of your blogger dashboard as shown in the screenshot below

create 404 page for Blogger blog

9. Once you have pasted the code save the arrangements and you are done

Since search engines understand only the HTML language this is why we used pages to create custom 404 Page rather than directly creating the message in the custom redirect box.

Make sure not to create a 404 page that simply tells users “page not found”. Try to add additional information and use polite sentences. Advice users to visit similar pages in your site.

Provide links to other pages such as Home page link or the links to most popular pages on your site. Moreover, make sure to use to design similar to other pages on your blog or website.

Make sure to direct search engines not to index your 404 Page. If you allow the search engines to index your page in the search result it will show your 404 page in the search results which can negatively impact the ranking of your blog.

How to Write a Blog in English When It Is Not Your First Language

how to write a blog in English

If you are a non-native speaker of English and looking for ways to write a blog in the English language, you have landed on the right page.

The English language is the most preferred language when it comes to blog writing. More than 65% of the bloggers write their blog in the English language. When you write your blog in English language, it provides a wide range of advantages.

Benefits of writing a blog in the English language

First, English language is an international language and used by a vast majority of people across the world. The majority of digital consumers prefer the English language over any other language.

According to Jaffbullas.com (Blogging facts and figures), English (66%) is the most preferred language to write blog followed by French (8.7%), Portuguese (6.5%) and Indonesian (3.5).

Similarly, Sysomos research  on blogger demographic shows that the largest number of bloggers are in the USA (29.22%) followed by UK (6.75%), and Japan (4.88%). Since the majority of the bloggers are from the English-speaking countries you stand a better chance of success if you write your blog in the English language.

Second, a blog in the English language provides you several advantages in terms of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). A majority of web hosting sites, SEO optimization tools, and analytics tools have been designed to offer their services to bloggers who write their content in the English language. So if you write your blog in English you will easily be able to optimize your content for search engines.

Third, the bloggers who write their blog in the English language earn more than the bloggers who write in their regional languages.

Now, let’s get back to the topics

How to Write Blog in the English with a Little Language Skills

The English language has become the most preferred language when it comes to global communication. However, a large number of people across the world find it hard to communicate in this language.

If you have a good command over the English language, you might not find it hard to write a blog in this language. However, if English is not your first language, you might find it hard to put across your ideas in the English language.

The majority of non-native speakers of English do not find it hard to read and understand the English language. However, when it comes to writing and speaking a majority of the people experiences mental block or end up making several grammatical mistakes.

Let’s check out in this article how to write a blog in the English language especially when you are not comfortable writing in this language. You can do several things to overcome writing problems if you follow the below-mentioned guidelines.

Choose a topic you enjoy and comfortable writing about

If you have studied in a school where subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths were taught to you in the English language, you will not find it difficult to write on topics related to these subjects. So what topics you can choose to write about.

If Biology was your favorite subject you can write about niches such as health and fitness. Similarly, if you were good at Physics you can become a tech blogger and write about technology. Both of these niches are very popular in the blogging world.

On the other hand, if you have studied in a school where all of your subjects where in your regional language expect English, you can still write a blog in the English language with a little practice.

Write about technical topics

The audience interested in technical subjects looks for information rather than grammatical mistakes in your blog. If you are tech savvy, you can choose the niche you know about. For example, if you have knowledge about computer software or hardware you can share your expertise with your audience.

In the business of blogging knowledge is more valuable than the writing skills. Writing skills can help you put across your ideas more effectively but you cannot engage your audience solely on the basis of your writing skills. Your blog visitors will return only if you offer them valuable information and knowledge that they can use in their daily life.

The good thing about technical writing is that you don’t have to use a wide range of words or sentences to communicate your idea. The majority of the technical words, phrases and sentences are similar and can be used in a wide range of combination to communicate different things.

Read and write a lot about your selected niche

The process of becoming a skilled writer begins with a lot of reading. Select some of the most popular blogs in your niche and read them regularly. It will provide you two benefits.

First, you will be able to understand the most popular phrases and words used in your niche. Second, you will unconsciously gain some skills that will come handy whenever you will experience mental block while creating content for your blog.

Make sure to write every day. Yes, every day no matter how poor you are at writing. You will gradually gain the required skills to become a skilled writer.

The majority of today's successful bloggers were not very skilled at writing when they started blogging. Hard work and regular practice are some of the ingredients that helped them in their endeavor.

Let me remind you here that several times you would think of quitting but, believe me, this stage of your struggle determines your success or failure.  Never quit and keep practicing. Focus on your goal. Think about good things in life if you feel low or tired.

Take a break but never quit.

Focus on conversational style of writing

The good thing about blogging is that blog readers mostly prefer the conversational style of writing. You don’t have to use words that we use in academic writing.

Simplicity is the key ingredient of content. The main objective of blogging is to create reliable and useful quality content that your audience can consume easily.

If you are good enough to put across your idea effectively, even native speakers of English would not mind reading your blog.

Here are some content writing tips to create content in the English language.

  • Avoid writing passive sentences. Write in active voice. For example, I am writing an article (active voice). Rather, an article is being written by me (Passive voice)
  • Avoid writing complex sentences. Write simple sentences that could be understood easily. Use tools like Hemingway app to improve readability of your sentences.
  • Avoid difficult words. Choose words and phrases that we use in our day to day conversation.
  • Avoid long paragraphs. Write short paragraphs to put across one idea at a time. Do not worry if some of your paragraphs are as long as a sentence.
  • Avoid grammatical mistakes. Use tools like Grammarly to proofread your content.

Similarly, you can use videos related to the content of your post. Videos are increasingly gaining popularity and perform better than written content in terms of audience engagement.

Finally, don’t try to be a perfectionist

You don’t have to be perfect in English language skills to become a successful blogger. Good language skills do help in creating a perfect blog. However, you can drive tons of traffic to your blog with average skills too if you know how to create quality content. Unique and useful content will help your stand out from the crowd.

No matter how good a person at content writing there is always a scope for improvement. So don’t get obsess to create a perfect piece of writing. You will learn several important skills during the course of your blogging career. In the beginning, it is important to gain necessary skills to create valuable content.

Best On Page SEO Techniques to Improve Search Engine Ranking

You cannot expect to rank higher in the search results solely on the basis of great content. If you want to improve the search engine ranking of your blog or website pages you will have to ensure that you are using best on page SEO techniques.

Search engine optimization involves on-page as well as off-page optimization. If you want to improve search engine ranking of your blog post you will learn in this article several useful SEO techniques about on page search engine optimization.

On page SEO techniques to improve search engine ranking

On page optimization techniques involve all those activities that you employ on your blog pages to improve search engine ranking. These activities include several things. Let’s discuss all the on-page SEO techniques one by one.

on page optimization

Create search engine friendly content

Make sure to create content that search engines love. Search engines mostly like quality content that is original and offers value to the users. Arrange your content in proper order and make use of headings and subheadings to provide structure to your content.

Moreover, you can also expand upon an existing topic but make sure that your content adds value to the existing content.
Remember search engines hate rewritten or rephrased content. So avoid using rewriting tools or wasting your time rewriting content from other websites.

Also, read:

Choose content keywords carefully

Keywords are the most important components of your blog content. Therefore, it is imperative on your part to choose content keywords carefully. If you want to rank you pages quickly in the search results target keywords with low to medium search volume. Moreover, make sure to use keywords with low to medium competition.

You cannot expect to rank higher in search results if you are aiming for highly competitive keywords. According to Statistica, on page optimization accounts for only 5% in ranking a site for highly competitive keywords. Whereas, the weighting of domain authority is highest in ranking a site for highly competitive keywords.

This means you cannot rank higher in search results solely on the basis of on page optimization if you are targeting highly competitive keywords.

Moreover, you must also take into consideration the words and phrases your targeted audience uses to search information. There are several online Keyword research tools that you can use to understand the search habits of your targeted audience.

Use at least one keyword in the title tag

The title of your post is the most important part of your content. You must create unique titles for your posts. Make sure to use at least one keyword in the title tag as search engines read your title tag to display your content in appropriate search results.

Creating a unique and original title is an art and you will learn it only after trials and errors. A unique title not only helps you attract the right audience but also facilitates the tasks of search engines in ranking your site.

The title of your page must be related to your content. Make sure to avoid using a long ambiguous title. Keep your title tag under 65 characters including spaces. In other words, you should ideally use 7 to 10 words to create a title.

The URL structure of your page is created on the basis of your title tag in Blogspot blog. If you host your blog on WordPress you should create a structure that provides insight into the content of your page.

Make sure to add one keyword in the headings

The heading (especially H1) plays an important role in ranking of your site. If you have not created heading for your previous blog posts make sure to create at least one heading and do not forget to add Keyword in it. Apart from Meta description and title of your page, the heading is most important part of your post. Search engines look for keywords in the heading as headings tell a lot about the content of the post.

Moreover, heading also provides structure to your content. Always start your post with a small introduction followed by first heading. You can also include subheadings and minor heading in your post if you think it will help your audience to better understand your content.

Make sure to use Keywords in the body of your article

How many times you should use the keywords in the body of your article? This is one of the questions that beginner bloggers often ask. There is no hard and fast rule for this. Ideally, you should add the keywords in the body of your post two to three times. Many bloggers make the mistake of stuffing their content with several keywords.

There are several things you should take into consideration while adding keywords in your post including keyword density and number of keywords.

Write unique Meta description for your blog content

Each of your blog pages is unique and requires Unique Meta description if you want to rank them higher in the search results. When I say unique description it means you must not copy content from your posts to create Meta description.

Meta description is the short summary of the article. Make sure to also include keywords in the Meta description or search description. Search engines mostly use the Meta description to understand the content of your post. However, at the same time, make sure not to stuff your Meta description with many keywords.

Optimize images, chart and graphs for search engine

Make sure to give a name to your blog images and provide a short description using the title tag. Use Alt attribute to place a keyword in the image as you can see in the image below.

Image optimization

Search engines use the title of the image to understand what the image is all about and alt tag enables search engines to show your image in right search results.

Content length

Blog posts with high word count are increasingly gaining popularity and is one of the factors that influence the ranking of your page. Blog posts with over 1000 words usually performance better than short posts in the search engine ranking.

However, make sure not to create content just for the sake of it. Avoid compromising the quality of your content in an effort to create lengthy content. Create content keeping your blog readers in mind rather that search engines.

Focus on internal linking

When you link your pages internally, it helps search engines to understand the related content in your site. Internal linking is effective on-page SEO technique of improving the ranking of your site in the search results.

For example, if you have a page that provides information about places of tourist interest in the United Kingdom, you can link similar other pages on your site to this content. It will not only help your site visitors get additional information but also help you improve your blog’s bounce rate and audience engagement.

The more time visitors spend on your site, the higher it ranks in the search engine results. The search engines find a site valuable if it manages to engage the audience. And what are the factors that contribute to improving audience engagement? They are easy navigation, quality content, user-friendly structure, and appropriate titles and search description related to the content of the pages.

Use appropriate external links

You are mostly likely to experience improvement in the ranking of your site if your pages have relevant and reliable external links. If the external links on your site are related to your content, search engines are most likely to rank you higher in the search results.

For example, if your content is related to search engine optimization, make sure to use a couple of relevant and reliable links in your content. It will not only help your users to get additional information but also help you to rank your page in the same category.

You can search the sites ranking on the first page of the search results for the similar content. If you find that the link can add value to your page and will be useful for your blog readers, make sure to add a link. However, do not use external links just for the sake of it. In other words, avoid using an external link with the intention of ranking your post higher in the search results.

On-site SEO techniques that indirectly influence on page optimization

Unlike on-page optimization, on-site SEO involves all those activities that you perform on your site to improve the overall ranking of your site. There are several on-site optimization techniques that  indirectly influence the ranking of your pages.

Here are some of the on-site techniques that you can employ to improve on page optimization.

Use Google webmaster tools

Google search console and Google analytics do not directly impact the search engine ranking of your blog. However, you can use these tools to get insight into the page errors, site speed, and crawling problems. Use Robots.txt and Robots tags effectively for SEO

Robots.txt enables search engines to index your site content effectively. If you have not created custom XML Sitemap for your site, make sure to add one to your Robots.txt. Search engines use robots.txt to understand what content in your site to index and what to ignore.

Create HTML sitemap for human readers

An HTML sitemap enables your blog readers to easily navigate your site. Google recommends webmasters to include an HTML sitemap so that human visitors can easily search the information they are looking for on your website.

Unlike XML sitemap a simple HTML sitemap is used by the human visitors to navigate your website. If your blog readers are able to easily search your site they are most likely to read more pages on your blog which in turn helps you improve your bounce rate and audience engagement.

The bounce rate of your site plays an important role in the ranking of your site. High bounce rate can adversely impact the performance of your pages in the search results. Google calculates bounce rate of your site on the basis of the behavior of audience on your site. If a reader leaves your site after reader the landing page it results in high bounce rate.

Therefore, make sure to provide a sitemap and links to most popular posts on your site. Moreover, you can also add Google search tool gadget to your blog if you want your readers to  spend more time on your blog.

Control comment spam

Spammy comments can seriously damage the reputation of your site. For example, if Google considers a site spammy and that particular site drops a link in your comment box, it will adversely impact the ranking of your site.

Spam comments are mostly used by the bloggers to get some quick backlinks. However, Google system is smart enough to identify blogs or websites that engage in such practices and mark them as Spammy sites. However, when Google notices such comments on your site it can lower your ranking in the search results.

You can easily control the spam comments by turning off public comment. However, if you have turned on public commenting you can use the attribute rel=nofollow on the links. This will help search engines to understand that you do not want to pass on your reputation to "Nofollow" links in your site.

How to choose keywords to target right audience

Keywords play an important role in the search engine optimization. They not only help you rank higher in search engine results but also help you reach out to the right audience. You can significantly improve the performance of your website by choosing right keywords for your content.

However, to make the best use of keywords you will have to choose right keywords for your blog post. If you are looking for basic information such as how to use keywords in an article, I would suggest you to first read my article 8 things you must know about keyword SEO.

This article will focus on how to choose keywords to target the right audience. Keywords are of different types and you can use them to target people looking for specific information. The first thing that you to need to understand is how people search things on the web.

To choose keywords first understand how your target audience searches things

People use different words, phrases, and sentence structure to search same things on the search engines. The education level, geographical location, age and language of the people play an important role in determining their search habits.

A native speaker of English might use different terms to search the same thing. For example, if a native speaker of English is searching for article writing tips, he or she might write “How to write an article” or ‘content writing tips’. On the other hand, a non-native speaker of English might use different terms to search the same thing on the net such as “tips to write an article in English”.

Such differences can significantly influence the search results. The Google Keyword planner also suggest keywords with different keyword phrases in a different category.

Similarly, if a person is looking for in-depth knowledge about a subject he will use different terms. For example, how to write SEO content.

A person looking for specific information might use popular terms of the industry rather than random words. For example, an experienced blogger is most likely to use the term such as how to improve audience engagement rather than how to make audience spend more time on a blog.
Although, both the keyword terms intend to get the same information, the keyword phrases significantly influence the search results.

In 2004 Google started using LSI indexing which focuses on the intent of the users rather than the actual keywords a user use to find information. This type of indexing has improved significantly over the years. It not only prevants keyword stuffing but also help users get desired results.

However, despite same intent sometimes the keyword phrases significantly changes the ranking of the sites in search results. Thus, the keywords still play an important role in the search results and a slight variation can influence the search results.

How to determine which keyword or keyword phrases to be used in an article

You can easily choose right keywords for your article by first identifying your audience. If you know how your audiences search information on the web, you can target those keywords to rank higher in search results.

If you are planning to target people looking for specific information, you can use the terms most popular in your industry. Moreover, Google Adword Keyword planner can suggest you several industry-related popular keywords or phrases.

However, you will also be required to understand why a person is looking for specific information. By understanding the words, grammar and structure of their sentence you can get an idea about the education level, occupation, and age of the audience.

For example, a small business owner might use this type of sentence “how to keep your customer happy” rather than how to retain or attract customer. On the other hand, a student of business management or a corporate business manager will use something like this “how to improve customer retention” or “how to retain customers” or best customer retention strategy.

So if your targeted audience is corporate businesses you must use the keywords they use to search things. Similarly, if your targeted audience is small business owners you must use the language they use to search things on the web.

Always remember even if your content appears on the first page of search engine for wrong keywords you will not be able to monetize your blog successfully despite a significant increase in blog traffic.

Identify the keywords your competitors are using

One of the best ways to identify the right keyword is to see the search engine results using targeted keyword. Simply enter the keyword (you are planning to use) in the search engines and check out the results. If your post is related to the search results you can use the keyword in your article.

Tools that can help you find right keywords

Google trends tools help you find trending topics. You can use this tool to gain insight into trending topics, and their popularity over the course of time.
